Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Pea Soup expire?
Pea soup can last for several days in different scenarios. When unopened and stored in a can or a container at room temperature, it may stay good for 2-5 years past the printed date provided it's kept in a cool and dry place. After opening, however, it needs to be refrigerated and is good for about 3-4 days. If you store your opened pea soup in the freezer, it significantly extends the shelf-life to around 4-6 months.
How do you tell if Pea Soup is bad?
It's important to determine whether your pea soup has gone bad. One clear sign is a change in smell: if the soup has an off smell, it's likely spoiled. Another indicator is mold. If you notice any fuzzy, discolored patches on the surface of the soup, it's best not to consume it. Texture is also a reliable indicator - if the soup has thickened considerably or has become slimy, it's time to discard it.
Tips for storing Pea Soup to extend shelf life
• Store your unopened canned pea soup in a cool, dry pantry. Avoid areas with high humidity or drastic temperature changes.
• Once opened, transfer the soup to an airtight container and refrigerate within two hours.
• When freezing, leave some headspace at the top of the container as the soup will expand when frozen.
• Freeze in individual portions for easy thawing.
• Defrost frozen soup in the refrigerator overnight, or use the defrost function on your microwave.
