Expiration & Storage Tips
When does blueberry jam expire?
An unopened jar of store-bought blueberry jam can last up to two years past the printed date if stored in a cool, dark place like your pantry. Once opened, if kept in the refrigerator, it should be consumed within six to twelve months for optimal taste. However, it can remain safe to eat for up to two years. Homemade jam usually has a shorter shelf-life, typically lasting anywhere from six months to a year in the refrigerator after being opened. If you decide to freeze your jam, it can extend its life to about a year. After thawing it out, you'll want to use it within a few weeks.
How do you tell if blueberry jam is bad?
Your senses are the first line of defense when determining if your blueberry jam has gone bad. Firstly, look for any unusual colors like dark or light spots, or greenish mold-like growth on the surface of the jam--if you see these, it's time to toss it. Also, check for changes in texture--a runny or watery consistency can indicate spoilage. Finally, give your jam a sniff. If it has an off smell, or if it has lost its sweet blueberry aroma, it's best to dispose of it.
Tips for storing blueberry jam to extend shelf life
• Always use a clean, dry spoon when scooping out your blueberry jam to avoid contamination with other foods or bacteria.
• If possible, store your jam in the door of your refrigerator where the temperature is constant.
• Once you’ve opened your jam, try to consume it within a certain timeframe, usually within 6 months to a year, depending on the brand and ingredients.
• When preparing homemade blueberry jam, make sure all your jars and lids are sterilized to prolong its shelf life.
• Do not eat directly from the jam jar! This can introduce bacteria from your mouth into the jar, spoiling it more quickly.
