Expiration & Storage Tips
When does grape jam expire?
Unopened store-bought grape jam can last a year to a year and a half past the printed date on the jar. It retains its best flavor for about 9-12 months. However, once opened, it should be used within a month, if stored in the refrigerator. If homemade and sealed properly, grape jam can last up to a year in the pantry, but after opening it should also be consumed within a month and kept refrigerated. As for frozen grape jam, it can extend its shelf-life up to a year. But, it's not a commonly practiced storage method due to possible texture changes upon thawing.
How do you tell if grape jam is bad?
To tell if grape jam is going bad, start by inspecting the jar itself. Any sign of mold, a broken seal, or leakage means you should throw it away. Open the jar and use your senses. If it smells funky or fermented, then it's gone bad. The same goes for the sight and texture-- if the color has darkened significantly, or if there are signs of mold, or if it feels slimy then toss it. A drastic change in flavor is another indicator that it's time to let go of the jar.
Tips for storing grape jam to extend shelf life
• Store unopened jars of store-bought grape jam in a cool, dry place. Avoid placing them near heat sources like stoves or ovens.
• Once opened, immediately place grape jam into the refrigerator where it can stay fresh for up to a month.
• Always use clean, dry utensils when scooping out the jam to prevent introducing bacteria into the jar. If you've double-dipped, it's best to refrigerate that jar and use it up quickly.
• If you've made homemade grape jam, ensure that it’s sealed properly in sterilised jars. Follow safe canning practices to prevent spoilage and to extend its shelf-life.
• Do not freeze jam as freezing and thawing can cause texture changes, making it less appealing.
