Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cajun seasoning expire?
Unopened Cajun seasoning can last up to 2 to 3 years beyond the 'best by' date on the package if stored properly. Once opened, the spice can maintain its potency and flavor for about 1 to 2 years. As it does not contain any perishable components, Cajun seasoning does not technically 'expire' but over time loses its flavor intensity.
If you have made your own Cajun seasoning blend at home using fresh spices, it will last between 1 to 2 years but may start losing its potency after 6 months. If you have stored the seasoning in the freezer, it can extend its shelf life for upto 4 years without losing any potency.
How do you tell if cajun seasoning is bad?
Cajun seasoning does not spoil or become harmful to consume over time but it may lose its potency and flavor. The most reliable way to tell if the seasoning has gone bad is by checking its color, aroma, and taste. If the seasoning has faded in color, has a weak aroma or flavor, or there is moisture or clumps in the jar, it indicates that it has lost its freshness, and it might be time to replace it with a new jar.
Tips for storing cajun seasoning to extend shelf life
• Keep the Cajun seasoning in a cool, dark, and dry place such as a pantry or spice cabinet.
• Ensure that the seasoning container is airtight to prevent moisture, which can cause clumping and a loss of flavor.
• Avoid using wet spoons to scoop out the seasoning as it introduces moisture, which can spoil the blend.
• Try to buy in amounts you will use within 6 months to ensure maximum flavor and potency.
• Always use a clean and dry spoon to take out the seasoning and tightly close the lid immediately after use.
