Expiration & Storage Tips
When does simple syrup expire?
Once opened, simple syrup can last about one month in the refrigerator. However, if left unopened and properly stored, the simple syrup can keep up to six months. For homemade simple syrup, it tends to have a shorter shelf life of about two weeks refrigerated due to absence of preservatives. When frozen, it can keep indefinitely but quality is best within two months.
How do you tell if simple syrup is bad?
To determine if simple syrup has gone bad, look for changes in color or consistency. It should be clear and slightly viscous. If you notice cloudiness, discoloration, or visible mold, the syrup has likely spoiled. Also, any off smell is a sure sign of spoilage.
Tips for storing simple syrup to extend shelf life
• Store the simple syrup in a clean, airtight container.
• Keep it at a cold temperature, ideally in the refrigerator, to inhibit bacterial growth.
• For longer storage, consider freezing the syrup in ice cube trays, then transfer the cubes to a freezer bag. This way, you can take out only the amount you need.
• If you're planning to make a large batch of simple syrup, consider adding a bit of vodka, which acts as a preservative to extend its shelf life.
