Expiration & Storage Tips
When does marzipan expire?
In a pantry, a store-bought and unopened pack of marzipan can last for about 6-9 months past the best-by date on the package. Once opened, marzipan will keep in the pantry for around 1-2 months if tightly sealed and stored in a cool, dry place. In the fridge, it can last for 2-3 months if properly stored. Homemade marzipan, on the other hand, has a shorter shelf life, staying fresh in the refrigerator for around 1-2 weeks. Freezing marzipan can significantly extend its shelf life to 6-8 months if properly wrapped in a freezer bag or cling wrap and sealed in an airtight container.
How do you tell if marzipan is bad?
The main signs that marzipan has gone bad are changes in color, smell, or texture. If the marzipan has turned hard, overly dry and brittle, or shows any signs of mold, it's definitely time to throw it away. Also, if it has an off smell or if it's lost its sweet, almondy aroma, it's probably spoiled.
Tips for storing marzipan to extend shelf life
• Always store marzipan in a cool, dry place. Avoid areas prone to high temperatures and humidity as these conditions can cause the sugar in the marzipan to break down and make it spoil faster.
• If you've opened the package, store leftover marzipan wrapped tightly in cling film or in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out.
• For longer storage, freeze the marzipan. Wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, then with aluminium foil, and finally place it in a resealable freezer bag. Thaw it in the refrigerator a day before you intended to use it.
• If you've made homemade marzipan, refrigerate it and try to use it within two weeks for the best quality.
