Expiration & Storage Tips
When does mixed citrus peel expire?
Similar to other dried fruits, unopened mixed citrus peel can last for about one to two years when kept in a cool, dark and dry environment. Once opened, the freshness can last up to six months stored at room temperature in an airtight container. The brightness and freshness of the color can be extended by refrigerating. Mixed citrus peels can also be frozen for up to a year. This doesn't technically make them last longer but it slows down the loss of color, aroma, and texture.
How do you tell if mixed citrus peel is bad?
It's pretty easy to tell if mixed citrus peels have gone bad. If there's visible mold or it if has a strange smell (other than the citrusy fragrance), then you definitely don't want to use it. Hardness and dryness are not necessarily signs of being bad, as drying is common when stored for a longer time. However, if the peel loses its vibrancy and has discolored, it might have lost much of the flavor even if it's not necessarily bad.
Tips for storing mixed citrus peel to extend shelf life
• Store your mixed citrus peel in a cool, dry place with good airflow, away from direct sunlight, like your pantry. This will limit the exposure to environmental factors that speed up their decay.
• Once you've opened the package, it would be best to store it in an airtight container. By doing so, you’ll cut down on its exposure to air and humidity, thereby prolonging its life.
• Consider portioning your mixed citrus peel and freeze in smaller containers or freezer-safe Ziploc bags. This way, you can defrost exactly what you need to minimize waste and maintain freshness.
• Also, it's a good idea to label the container with the date of first opening or freezing. This will serve as a key reminder for when the product was first used, and can give you an estimation of its current freshness.
