Expiration & Storage Tips
When does orange food coloring expire?
When unopened, orange food coloring can last about three years if stored correctly. The expiration date on the package will guide you, but as a rule of thumb, powdered and gel food colorings tend to last longer than the liquid variety. Once you've opened the coloring, you should ideally use it within 1-2 years. The good part is, even if it goes slightly beyond this timeframe, it's usually still safe for consumption; the color intensity might just fade a bit. Orange food coloring does not commonly get frozen as it may change the consistency.
How do you tell if orange food coloring is bad?
The most obvious way to tell if your orange food coloring has gone bad is to observe any changes in its color. If it appears more dull or less bright than usual, it may be time to toss it. You can also check if it has developed any mold or unusual smells. These things rarely happen but should be kept in mind. Another point of consideration is the state of the container. If it's leaking or damaged, the coloring might have been compromised.
Tips for storing orange food coloring to extend shelf life
• Store your orange food coloring in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Excessive heat can degrade the color.
• Always ensure the bottle or container is tightly sealed after each use to prevent exposure to air, which can diminish the intensity of the color.
• Avoid freezing food coloring as it can alter its consistency and even lead to separation. If this happens by accident, shake well before using, but remember the impact might not be as desired.
• Try setting a reminder in your phone or on your calendar when you first open the food coloring so that you'll know when it's been two years.
