Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Chocolate Buttercream Frosting expire?
When unopened and stored properly, commercially-made chocolate buttercream frosting can last up to 3-4 months past the 'best by' date printed on the packaging. Once opened, chocolate buttercream frosting should be used within 2 weeks if it's stored in the pantry or at room temperature, but can last up to a month if refrigerated. If you've frozen the frosting, it can last up to 3 months.
How do you tell if Chocolate Buttercream Frosting is bad?
Spoiled chocolate buttercream frosting may become dry and crusty, or develop mold. The color may also change with time. Another tell-tale sign that your frosting has gone bad is a change in smell - if it smells sour, off, or simply not as it usually does, it's time to discard it. If you're ever in doubt, it's best to err on the side of caution and throw it away.
Tips for storing Chocolate Buttercream Frosting to extend shelf life
• Keep unopened store-bought frosting in a cool, dry place.
• Once you've opened the frosting, make sure to seal the container tightly after each use. If the original container isn't airtight, transfer the frosting to an airtight container.
• Store opened frosting in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life. Ensure not to use a spoon or knife that's been used before in order to prevent contaminating the frosting with bacteria.
• To freeze chocolate buttercream frosting, spoon it into an airtight container, squeeze as much air out as possible, and seal it well before putting in the freezer. To defrost, simply transfer it to the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight before using.
