Expiration & Storage Tips
When does candied orange peel expire?
Candied orange peel is quite hardy due to the preservation process and can last for quite a while if stored properly. When it's store-bought and unopened, it can generally last up to two years from the production date, although its best to check the printed date on the package. Once opened, candied orange peel should still be fine for up to six months, although the quality may start to decline after about a month. If made at home, it should last for up to a month in the refrigerator or up to six months in the freezer.
How do you tell if candied orange peel is bad?
If your candied orange peel has gone bad, it might exhibit a number of changes. First off, look closely for any signs of mold, often showing as fluffy, white or colored specks on the surface or within the peel. The peel may also start to have a sour or off smell that's not the fresh, citrusy scent you'd expect. Additionally, if you find that the candy has become overly hard, dry and lost its chewy texture, it's better to toss it out. Moreover, an unusually bitter or off taste is a sure sign that it's time to throw it away.
Tips for storing candied orange peel to extend shelf life
• Always keep your candied orange peels in a cool, dark and dry place where they remain undisturbed. This can be a pantry or a drawer away from sunlight and humidity.
• Use an airtight container or sealable bag to store your candied orange peel. This will help to keep humidity out and protect from any intrusive aromas in the storage place.
• If you choose to refrigerate your candied orange peel, separate the peel into smaller portions beforehand. Each time you want some, just take out what you need and quickly reseal the container. The lesser the exposure to air, the longer it will last.
• You can also freeze the candied orange peel to extend the shelf life up to six months. Use a freezer safe container or bag and make sure the peels are not pressed together to prevent them from freezing together. When ready to use, simply allow them to thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
