Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Monkey Bread expire?
When stored at room temperature and properly covered, homemade monkey bread can stay fresh for up to 2 days. If refrigerated, it can last for around 1 week. If you want to extend its shelf life you can freeze it; frozen monkey bread can last for up to 2 months. Please note that store-bought monkey bread may have a longer shelf life based on the preservatives used, so always refer to the expiration date on the packaging.
How do you tell if Monkey Bread is bad?
If your monkey bread has gone bad, it will develop a stale smell and taste, in addition to possible visible mold. The texture can change significantly, either drying out or becoming surprisingly moist. The color can change slightly too, becoming darker than usual or even showing spots of discoloration.
Tips for storing Monkey Bread to extend shelf life
• Always cover your monkey bread when you store it to prevent it from drying out.
• Just as with many other breads, avoid storing monkey bread in the refrigerator, as the cool temperatures can cause it to become stale more quickly. Unless it’s hot and humid, room temperature is usually fine.
• For long-term storage, consider freezing your monkey bread. Wrap individual pieces tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a resealable bag before freezing. When you're ready to eat, you can reheat it in a oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes or microwave it for 1-2 minutes, depending on the size of the piece and your microwave's power.
• If you frequently bake monkey bread, investing in a bread box could help extend its shelf life at room temperature. Bread boxes help to maintain an ideal environment that isn't too dry or too moist, which can extend the life of all types of baked goods.
