Expiration & Storage Tips
When does sprouted grain bread expire?
When unopened, sprouted grain bread can last up to a week past its printed expiration date if stored in the pantry. Once opened, however, the clock starts ticking, and it will generally keep well for about 3-5 days in the pantry. Unlike regular bread, sprouted grain bread is often stored in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life due to its lack of preservatives. In the fridge, expect your bread to last for about two weeks. If you choose to freeze it, the bread can last for up to six months.
How do you tell if sprouted grain bread is bad?
To tell if your sprouted grain bread has gone off, start by inspecting its color and texture. Any spots of mold, especially if they are black, blue, green, or pink, are a clear sign the bread has expired. In addition, if the bread has an off smell or if it feels damp to the touch, it's probably gone bad. To test further, take a small bite—if it tastes sour or off in any way, it's best to throw it away.
Tips for storing sprouted grain bread to extend shelf life
• Keep your sprouted grain bread in a cool, dry place. The pantry works, but the fridge is even better.
• If you buy your bread in bulk, consider freezing it to make it last. Just be sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then place it in a freezer bag.
• After each use, make sure the bread is sealed tightly in its packaging to prevent air from drying it out.
• Avoid storing bread near strong odors, as it can absorb these.
