Expiration & Storage Tips
When does canned chicken expire?
Canned chicken can last up to 2-5 years if unopened and stored properly in a cool, dark place, like the pantry. Some canned foods can last much longer than the printed date on the can, but it's best to use it within a year for the best quality. Once the can is opened, the chicken should be eaten within 2-3 days if refrigerated. If the opened can of chicken is frozen, it can last up to 2-3 months.
How do you tell if canned chicken is bad?
If the can is bulging or leaking, it's a clear sign the chicken has gone bad. Once opened, if the chicken has a strong, off-putting smell, changes color to a graying hue, or has a slimy texture, it's best to toss it. When in doubt, throw it out. Eating spoiled canned chicken can cause foodborne illnesses.
Tips for storing canned chicken to extend shelf life
• Store unopened cans of chicken in a cool, dark place like a pantry. Avoid areas that can fluctuate in temperature, like a garage or near an oven.
• Once opened, transfer the leftover canned chicken into an air-tight container before freezing or refrigerating. Discard the original can, as metal may leach into the food once the can is open.
• If freezing, divide the leftover chicken into useable portions, this way, you only defrost what you need and prevent the entire batch from being exposed to warmer temperatures too often.
• For defrosting, move the frozen chicken to the refrigerator and allow it to thaw slowly. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a day, depending on the portion sizes. Avoid defrosting at room temperature, as this can lead to bacteria growth.
