Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Arancini expire?
Homemade arancini, an Italian treat of deep-fried rice balls, should ideally be consumed within 1 to 2 days for optimum freshness, but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days. If commercially packed and unopened, it can be stored until the printed date on the package. Once opened, consume within 1-2 days. Freezing arancini is also a common household scenario. After cooking, allow them to cool completely, wrap each in plastic wrap, then store in a freezer bag for up to three months. When ready to enjoy, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and heat in an oven preheated to 350F (175C) for 15-20 minutes, or until heated through.
How do you tell if Arancini is bad?
Spoiled arancini might have a sour or off smell, have visible mold, or feel slimy to touch. It's also common for bad arancini to lose its distinctive flavor and become bland or off-tasting. If it shows any of these signs, it's best to throw it out and make a new batch.
Tips for storing Arancini to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate leftover arancini as soon as possible. Leaving them out at room temperature for too long can lead to faster spoilage.
• Avoid storing them in the door of the fridge, as the temperature is less consistent there.
• If freezing, wrap each arancini in plastic wrap and then place in a freezer bag. This prevents freezer burn and keeps them at their best quality.
• Allow arancini to cool completely before storing, as putting hot food in the fridge can lower the temperature of the fridge and potentially spoil other food.
