Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Molasses Cookies expire?
Molasses cookies usually maintain their quality for about 2-3 weeks at normal room temperature if stored properly. If kept in a fridge, you can enjoy them for up to 6 months. If you neatly pack them in a freezer-safe bag and store them in a freezer, they can last very well for around 12 months.
How do you tell if Molasses Cookies is bad?
The smell is usually the first indicator; expired cookies can smell stale, sour, or off. When you touch the cookies, if they're excessively hard or have a sandy texture rather than their usual crumbly or fluffy one, it's a good sign they've gone bad. Additionally, any visible mold or unusual discoloration is a sure sign that your molasses cookies are no longer safe to eat.
Tips for storing Molasses Cookies to extend shelf life
• Always store molasses cookies in an airtight container to prevent moisture loss and keep them soft.
• If you live in a particularly dry or humid climate, consider adding a slice of bread into the container; the cookies will absorb the moisture from the bread to stay fresh longer.
• Freezing cookies is an excellent way to extend their lifespan. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them before transferring to a freezer-safe bag. This way, they won't stick together.
• To defrost, leave them at room temperature for around 15-20 minutes or heat them in the oven at a low temperature.
• Remember to label the container or the bag with the date before you put them in the fridge or freezer.
