Expiration & Storage Tips
When does toffee expire?
Many people are surprised to learn that toffee, like most confections, has a pretty long shelf-life thanks to the high sugar content that acts as a natural preservative. Unopened, store-bought toffee can typically last anywhere from 6-9 months past the printed date on the package. Once it's been opened, you'll want to enjoy your toffee within about 2 weeks for the best texture and flavor. As for homemade toffee, it tends to have a shorter shelf life, best consumed within 1-2 weeks. Toffee can also be frozen for up to a year.
How do you tell if toffee is bad?
There are a couple of things you'll want to look for. First, if the toffee has developed a dull appearance or has a sticky or overly hard texture, this can be an indication that it's past its prime. Also, if it has a strange or off smell, it may have gone bad. Similarly, any signs of mold or discoloration should immediately signify that the toffee is no longer good to eat.
Tips for storing toffee to extend shelf life
• Always store toffee in a cool, dry place; heat and humidity are the main culprits for reduced quality.
• If you've opened a package of toffee, make sure to tightly reseal or transfer it to an airtight container to help maintain its quality.
• For an extended shelf life, freeze your toffee. Make sure it's properly wrapped in a freezer-safe container or bag to avoid any frost. Defrost it at room temperature before eating.
