Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Peanut Brittle expire?
Peanut Brittle is a delightful snack with a decent shelf life, especially when stored in the right conditions. Unopened store-bought peanut brittle, when stored in a cool and dry place, can easily last 6-9 months past the 'best by' date printed on the packet. Once opened, you should aim to eat it within 1-2 months to enjoy it at its best quality, but it may still be safe for consumption after this time. Homemade peanut brittle, which lacks the preservatives often found in store-bought versions, will usually only last about 2 weeks at room temperature. Freezing isn't commonly used for peanut brittle, but can extend its life up to 6 months, with some change in texture.
How do you tell if Peanut Brittle is bad?
Some indications that peanut brittle has gone off include a stale or rancid smell due to the exposure of the nuts to air over time. Changes in texture can also indicate that it's no longer good to eat. If it's become excessively sticky and hard to break or overly chewy instead of crunchy, that's also a sign it might be past its prime. Another clear indicator is the presence of mold (though this is rare). In these cases, it's best to discard it.
Tips for storing Peanut Brittle to extend shelf life
• Store your opened or homemade peanut brittle in an airtight container to slow down oxidation.
• Keep your peanut brittle in a cool, dry place, away from heat and light sources. Excessive humidity can make it sticky and encourage mold growth.
• If you decide to refrigerate it (although not necessary), wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before placing it in an airtight container to avoid moisture accumulation.
• Separate layers of peanut brittle with parchment paper in the storage container to prevent them sticking together.
• If choosing to freeze, use a freezer-safe container, and again separate layers with parchment paper.
