Expiration & Storage Tips
When does chuck steaks expire?
Unopened, a chuck steak from the grocery store will typically last 3 to 5 days in the fridge. It's recommended to use it as soon as possible for peak flavor. If it has a 'use by' date on the packaging, use this as your guide. Once opened, obviously, you should cook it immediately. In a frozen state, chuck steaks can last between 6 to 12 months. When it comes to thawing, use your refrigerator. This can take up to 2 days, so plan ahead!
How do you tell if chuck steaks is bad?
There are several ways to tell if a chuck steak has gone bad. You may notice a change in color; steaks often acquire a brown or gray tint when they start to turn. A strong, unpleasant smell is also a dead giveaway. If the steak feels slimy or sticky to the touch, that's another indication that it's time to dispose of it. Lastly, if you see any signs of mold, do not consume it.
Tips for storing chuck steaks to extend shelf life
• Always store steaks at the back of the fridge where it's coldest.
• If you won't cook it within 3-5 days of buying, freeze it right after you get home.
• Pack separately in airtight plastic bags or wrap tightly in cling wrap before you freeze them.
• For thawing, move it from freezer to fridge. It's the safest way to do it, but it takes time, so plan ahead.
• Avoid refreezing thawed steaks as it affects the taste and texture.
