Expiration & Storage Tips
When does lactose free milk expire?
When unopened, lactose-free milk can last beyond the sell-by date by about a week to ten days, providing it is properly stored in a cool environment, ideally below 40°F (4°C). Once you open the container, it is usually safe to consume for up to seven to ten days, even if this exceeds the use-by date. If you freeze lactose-free milk, it can extend its shelf life for up to three months, however, its texture and taste might slightly change upon thawing.
How do you tell if lactose free milk is bad?
Just like regular milk, you'll know that lactose-free milk has gone bad when it develops a sour, off-putting smell. This scent is typically strong and unmistakable. Additionally, if the milk has a thick consistency or appears curdled, or if it has visible mold, it's best to throw it away. Also be on the lookout for any changes in color.
Tips for storing lactose free milk to extend shelf life
• Always store lactose-free milk in the fridge, ideally in its original container.
• Try to keep it in the middle or at the back of the fridge rather than on the door, where temperature fluctuations can occur.
• Once opened, it should be consumed within seven to ten days. Always seal the package tightly to prevent bacterial growth.
• Never leave the milk out at room temperature for more than two hours. Bacteria can multiply rapidly at room temperature.
• If you want to freeze the milk, ensure it's packed in an airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bags to protect it from freezer burn. Thaw in the fridge before use. Shake well before using as freezing might cause slight separation of components.
