Expiration & Storage Tips
When does passion fruit puree expire?
Passion fruit puree typically lasts up to 7 days in the refrigerator once it has been opened. However, by checking the 'Best By' date on the packaging, you can see when the product should ideally be consumed when unopened. Now, if you decide to freeze your passion fruit puree, it can last up to 6 months, offering you a more prolonged use.
How do you tell if passion fruit puree is bad?
Even though passion fruit puree has a distinct, tropical fragrance, spoiled puree will develop a sour and off-putting smell that strongly differs from its original aroma. The puree might also exhibit visible mold or yeast growth, hence its color may change to a darker shade. Furthermore, if the texture becomes abnormally thick and clumpy instead of smooth, then it's time to throw it away.
Tips for storing passion fruit puree to extend shelf life
• Always keep your passion fruit puree refrigerated, preferably at 40°F (4.4°C) or below. The colder temperature helps slow down the growth of bacteria and thus, extends the puree's shelf-life.
• Use an airtight container for storing opened passion fruit puree. This prevents it from absorbing odors from other foods stored in your fridge, and keeps it fresh longer.
• Freezing passion fruit puree is a great option if you won't be using it up within a week. To freeze, pour the puree into ice cube trays. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe bag or container. This method allows you to defrost small amounts as needed.
• Always use clean utensils when handling the puree. Introducing bacteria or other contaminants into the puree will shorten its shelf-life.
• If planning to store the puree for a long duration, consider storing divided portions rather than in a single bulk. This way, you're only opening or defrosting the amount you need, leaving the rest uncontaminated.
