Expiration & Storage Tips
When does grapefruit juice expire?
Unopened grapefruit juice can typically last for 12 months from the production date if stored properly in a cool and dark place such as a basement. Once opened, it should be consumed within 7-10 days if kept in the fridge. If the grapefruit juice is homemade without any stabilizers or preservatives, it should be consumed within 1-2 days for the best freshness. Additionally, grapefruit juice can be frozen for up to 3-4 months maintaining a good quality but ideally consumed within the first month for preserving its best quality.
How do you tell if grapefruit juice is bad?
Like most perishable foods, the first sign that grapefruit juice has gone bad is a change in its appearance. The juice may appear cloudier than usual, or you could notice mold or yeast growing on the surface, which often appears as little green or black dots. The smell will also change, becoming sour or 'off.' Lastly, if the juice tastes sour or fizzy, it has started to ferment and should not be consumed.
Tips for storing grapefruit juice to extend shelf life
• Keep the juice in the fridge once opened. The cold temperatures slow down the growth of microbes, thereby extending the shelf life.
• Always keep the juice in a tightly sealed container. This prevents air and bacteria from getting in.
• Try to consume the juice as quickly as possible once you open it.
• If you're not going to drink it in a week, consider freezing a portion for later use.
• To thaw, put your frozen grapefruit juice in the refrigerator 24 hours before you plan to use it. Thawing it in this way helps it maintain as much flavor and nutrition as possible.
• Never thaw your juice at room temperature, as it could become a breeding ground for bacteria.
