Expiration & Storage Tips
When does instant coffee expire?
An unopened jar of instant coffee will generally last two to twenty years, keeping its flavor intact if stored correctly. Even after the 'Best By' date on the jar, it can still remain fresh but may lose some flavor and aroma over time. Once opened, a jar of instant coffee should ideally be consumed within a year for optimal taste. However, it is safe to use for a longer period, often many years, as instant coffee doesn't really spoil in a traditional sense.
How do you tell if instant coffee is bad?
Instant coffee lasts a pretty long time, but if you notice any changes in its color, flavor, or smell, those are signs it might have gone bad. If your instant coffee granules have clumped together, it's a sign of moisture exposure which could lead to mold growth. In the rare event, if you see mold or any other contamination, it is advisable to discard the coffee immediately.
Tips for storing instant coffee to extend shelf life
• Store instant coffee in a cool, dark place away from heat and humidity, like a pantry.
• Once opened, always ensure the jar is tightly sealed after each use to prevent moisture from ruining the coffee.
• Keeping instant coffee in a vacuum-sealed container can improve its shelf-life.
• Avoid using a wet spoon as it will introduce moisture into the coffee jar.
