Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Coconut Cake expire?
Most store-bought or bakery coconut cakes last about 2 to 3 days past the 'sell by' date on the package. Once opened (or if it's homemade), it's best to consume it within 1-2 days. If stored properly in the refrigerator, it can last up to 7 days. Freezing a freshly-baked coconut cake can extend its life up to 2 to 3 months.
How do you tell if Coconut Cake is bad?
Check for visible signs of mold, usually greenish-blue spots. In addition, smell the cake. If it has a sour, unpleasant odor, it has likely spoiled. Another hint might be a change in flavor. If the cake tastes stale or off, it's best to throw it away.
Tips for storing Coconut Cake to extend shelf life
• Always store the cake in a cool, dry place to prevent it from going stale.
• If you want to keep the cake for a longer period, place it in the fridge.
• To freeze, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then again in aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. Before freezing, you can also cut it into individual portions for easy thawing.
• Never leave cake out in warmer temperatures, as this can encourage growth of bacteria.
• Keep the cake in a sealed container to preserve its moisture content and prevent it from absorbing other odors from your fridge.
• When defrosting frozen cake, let it sit in the refrigerator overnight or defrost it at low power in the microwave.
