Expiration & Storage Tips
When does lentil pasta expire?
Unopened packages of lentil pasta can last in your pantry for about 1-2 years. This is typically the same as the sell-by date or best-by date printed on the package. However, once the package is opened, the lentil pasta should be consumed within 1-2 weeks. Homemade lentil pasta, on the other hand, should be eaten almost immediately within 1-2 days, due to the freshness and absence of preservatives. If you have an excess amount, consider freezing this type of pasta. When frozen, it will last up to 6 months.
How do you tell if lentil pasta is bad?
To determine if your lentil pasta has turned bad, look for any signs of mold or irregular discoloration. Additionally, a sour or off smell is a strong indicator that your pasta is no longer fresh. If the pasta has been stored for a long time, check it for presence of weevils or small bugs, they love pasta too! Remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry, when in doubt, throw it out.
Tips for storing lentil pasta to extend shelf life
• Keep lentil pasta in a cool, dry place like your pantry or a kitchen cupboard.
• Consider transferring the pasta to an airtight container after opening the package to extend its shelf life.
• For freezing, store your fresh homemade lentil pasta in freezer-safe containers or resealable freezer bags. Be sure to squeeze out any excess air.
• If you notice that a large amount of your pasta goes unused, try purchasing smaller amounts or only cook what you need at a time. This way, less goes to waste.
• Don't forget to label any stored pasta with the date it was packed or frozen, so you know when it's time to use it or toss it.
