Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Greek Chicken expire?
If it's store-bought, Greek chicken can typically last for about 3 to 4 days in the fridge after being cooked, even if the 'sell by' date on the package hasn't passed. If you decide to freeze it, it can last up to 4 months. However, it should be noted that while freezing extends the chicken's shelf life, it may somewhat diminish its texture and flavor after a while.
How do you tell if Greek Chicken is bad?
Chicken has gone bad when it develops a slimy texture, an off smell, and/or a dull color. Using your senses of touch, smell, and sight will help. If the chicken is sticky or slimy to the touch, then it's most likely spoiled. You can also sniff it - if it smells foul or off, it's not safe to eat. Lastly, look at the color. Fresh chicken should have a pink, fleshy color. If it's faded or has dark or white spots, that's an indication that it's spoiled.
Tips for storing Greek Chicken to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate or freeze Greek chicken within two hours of cooking.
• Store Greek chicken in shallow containers for quick, even cooling in the refrigerator.
• If freezing Greek chicken, wrap it tightly in heavy-duty aluminum foil or plastic wrap, or store in freezer bags to prevent freezer burn.
• When ready to eat, defrost the frozen chicken in the refrigerator, never on the counter, to prevent bacterial growth. It typically takes a full day to defrost, so plan ahead.
