Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Quinoa Salad expire?
A homemade quinoa salad, if stored properly, can last in the fridge for 3-5 days. If you've purchased a pre-packaged quinoa salad from the store, check the use-by or best-by date on the packaging. However, once opened, it should be consumed within 2-3 days, even if the printed date is further out. Quinoa salad does not freeze well due to the fresh ingredients it often contains such as cucumbers or tomatoes.
How do you tell if Quinoa Salad is bad?
Spoiled quinoa salad often exhibits telltale signs such as an off smell. If it smells sour, moldy, or anything other than fresh, it’s best to discard it. Additionally, any visible mold or a slimy texture are surefire signs that your quinoa salad has gone bad. Lastly, if the salad has changed color or the quinoa appears to be darker than when it was fresh, this is also an indication of spoilage.
Tips for storing Quinoa Salad to extend shelf life
• Keep your quinoa salad in an airtight container in the fridge. This not only prevents it from absorbing smells from other foods, but also protects it from temperature fluctuations which can hasten spoilage.
• Don't leave your quinoa salad out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Bacteria grows quickly at room temperature and can cause foodborne illness.
• If you've made a large batch of quinoa salad, consider dividing it into smaller portions before refrigerating. This way, you only open and expose the amount you plan to eat, and the rest stays fresher for longer.
• Avoid freezing quinoa salad as the texture and taste of fresh ingredients like tomatoes and cucumbers deteriorates rapidly in the freezer.
