Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Taco Casserole expire?
Like most homemade dishes, your taco casserole isn't going to have a specific date on the package. In the fridge, an unopened casserole should last for up to four days. However, once it's been opened, you're going to want to consume it within two-three days for optimal freshness. If you've frozen your casserole, you can typically defrost and eat it up to 2 months after the day you made it.
How do you tell if Taco Casserole is bad?
Taco casserole going bad can be identified by one or more of the following: a change in color, usually towards a darker, duller version of its original hue; an off smell, as freshness fades, a stale or even sour scent can be a dead giveaway; mold, in obvious cases, green, white or black spots may be visible; and finally, an off taste, if you're brave enough to taste it, but we advise not to reach this point!
Tips for storing Taco Casserole to extend shelf life
• Always allow your casserole to cool before storing it. This can both stop the growth of bacteria and prevent the dish from becoming soggy.
• Using airtight containers for storing is always a good idea as they protect against unwanted moisture and odours in the refrigerator.
• Split your casserole into portions before freezing. This way, you only need to defrost what you'll eat, helping you avoid both waste and the need to eat it all at once.
• Always label your containers with the date it was made before storing. Memory can be unreliable, but your label maker won’t be!
