Expiration & Storage Tips
When does puff pastry expire?
Unopened frozen puff pastry, if kept properly frozen, can last up to ten months past its 'best before' date. But once you've thawed that frozen puff pastry package (which should be done in your fridge, and not at room temp), use it within 3 to 4 days. If the puff pastry has been opened and kept refrigerated, it should also be used within 3 to 4 days. Homemade puff pastry can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
How do you tell if puff pastry is bad?
One of the most reliable signs the puff pastry has gone bad is a change in color. If your pastry looks a bit duller than when you first bought it, or if it now has a gray or yellow tinge, it's probably time to bid it farewell. Also, take a moment to smell the pastry. If it smells sour or off in any way, it's best not to risk it. Another telltale sign of spoilage is if the dough is sticky or no longer smooth.
Tips for storing puff pastry to extend shelf life
• Keep puff pastry in the freezer for a longer shelf-life. It can be defrosted overnight in the refrigerator when ready to use.
• If you've made puff pastry from scratch, consider freezing the portion you're not immediately using.
• Once the puff pastry package has been opened, wrap any unused pastry tightly in plastic wrap before storing it in the fridge to prevent it from drying out.
• If you wish to freeze baked puff pastry items, let them cool completely before placing in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags.
