Expiration & Storage Tips
When does gluten free cereal expire?
Unopened gluten free cereal will usually maintain its quality for 2 to 3 months beyond the 'best by' or 'best before' date printed on the package. Once you've opened the box however, you should consume it within one month and if there is any left after this time you should check it very carefully to determine its freshness. If you decide to freeze your cereal, it can usually extend the life by 1 to 2 months, but you might notice a little change in its texture upon defrosting.
How do you tell if gluten free cereal is bad?
You'll know if your gluten free cereal has gone bad if it develops an odd smell or flavor, if it gets soggy even without adding milk, or if it has an abnormal color. In worse case scenarios, if you see any mold or bugs (they're attracted to grains), then it's time to throw it out.
Tips for storing gluten free cereal to extend shelf life
• Keep your gluten free cereal in a dry and cool place, like a pantry or cabinet.
• After opening the box, place the leftover cereal in an airtight container or resealable bag to ensure it stays fresh.
• Avoid storing your cereal above the stove, refrigerator, or any other appliance that produces heat as this will promote the staling process.
• If you need to extend the life of your cereal, consider freezing it. To defrost, just pour it out onto a baking tray and let it come to room temperature.
