Expiration & Storage Tips
When does gluten free granola expire?
Unopened bags or containers of gluten-free granola usually last 6-9 months past the 'best by' date printed on the packaging. Once opened and properly resealed, granola can last around 4-6 months. When stored in the refrigerator, the shelf life of gluten-free granola can be extended by another 6 months. Freezing is another viable option, which can prolong its life for up to a year.
How do you tell if gluten free granola is bad?
Check for changes in color, smell, texture, or taste. Gluten-free granola that's going bad will often develop a rancid smell and taste due to the high oil content in the nuts and seeds. It may also become moldy if improperly stored in a damp environment. If the granola looks or smells off or if mold is noticeable, it's safer to toss it out and make a fresh batch.
Tips for storing gluten free granola to extend shelf life
• The best way to store gluten-free granola is in an airtight container in a cool, dark and dry place.
• You can prolong its shelf life by storing it in the refrigerator or the freezer, but make sure it’s properly sealed to prevent moisture infiltration and freezer burn.
• Using desiccant packs can keep your granola fresh for longer. These are little packets that absorb moisture and can be put directly in the granola container.
• If you decide to freeze granola, use portion-sized freezer bags. This way, you will thaw only what you need, reducing the chances of spoilage.
