Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Buttered Rum expire?
Buttered rum doesn't expire per se, but it's best when consumed within a few months. If it's store bought, it should last until the use-by date on the bottle, which is typically 1-2 years. Once opened, it will last around 6-8 months if stored correctly. If homemade, it should be consumed within 2-3 weeks for optimal flavor.
How do you tell if Buttered Rum is bad?
Buttered rum won't spoil in a way that's harmful, but it will start to lose its flavor and aroma over time. If the rum has a strange smell, tastes off or different than usual, it's probably past its prime. The color can also darken as it oxidizes, so look out for a darker color than usual. If it's homemade, look for the butter separating or going rancid. Homemade buttered rum will also have a sour off taste when it's not good anymore.
Tips for storing Buttered Rum to extend shelf life
• Always make sure to store your buttered rum away from light and heat, a cool, dark cupboard is perfect.
• If the buttered rum is homemade, keep it in the fridge to make the butter last longer.
• If it's opened, make sure to reseal it tightly after every use to prevent oxidation.
• Bottles of rum should be stored upright to prevent the cork from drying out and the alcohol from oxidizing.
• If you experience a rancid smell with homemade buttered rum, freeze it to prolong its life.
