Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tonic water expire?
Unopened tonic water typically has a shelf life of about 9-12 months, though you should always check the best before date printed on the package to ensure maximum taste and freshness. Once open, tonic water will stay good for around 2-3 days in the refrigerator before losing its carbonation and flavor. Unlike many food products, freezing tonic water isn't commonly practiced and it can actually damage the can or bottle due to the expansion of water when it turns to ice.
How do you tell if tonic water is bad?
Tonic water, like any other carbonated beverage, will lose its fizz once it's past its prime. This is quite easy to notice because it will become flat or lack effervescence when poured. In addition, if the tonic water develops an off-odor, changes color, or you see mold, then it has definitely gone bad and you should discard it immediately.
Tips for storing tonic water to extend shelf life
• Always keep unopened tonic water in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
• Once opened, store the tonic water in the refrigerator. Try to reduce its exposure to air to maintain carbonation.
• If you regularly drink tonic water, buying smaller individual packages rather than large bottles can prevent waste and maintain freshness.
• Never store tonic water, or any other carbonated beverage, in the freezer as this can cause the container to burst.
