Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Flavored Water expire?
When unopened, the store-bought flavored water is usually safe to drink for about 9-12 months, even beyond its expiration date mentioned on the package, as long as it has been properly stored. But once opened, you should aim to consume it within 7-10 days to maintain its freshness and quality. Homemade flavored water's shelf life is a bit shorter, generally good for about 3-5 days in the refrigerator. Freezing flavored water is also possible and can actually make for some fun ice cubes to add to your beverages. In a freezer, frozen flavored water should remain good for about 6 months, but for the best flavor quality, consume within 2 months.
How do you tell if Flavored Water is bad?
Telling if flavored water has gone bad is quite similar to checking regular water for spoilage. You will likely notice a distinct change in the taste, color or smell of the water - it may develop a slightly sour smell or the flavor might taste off or far less vibrant than when it was fresh. Also, if the bottle is bloated or if you notice any signs of mold or cloudiness in the water, it’s best not to consume it.
Tips for storing Flavored Water to extend shelf life
• Always store your flavored water in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, like a pantry or refrigerator.
• Once opened, ensure you close the lid tightly after every use to prevent any contaminants from entering.
• For homemade flavored water, consider storing in a glass or stainless steel container rather than plastic to avoid any chemical leaching.
• If you're going to freeze flavored water, leave a bit of space at the top of the container to allow for the water's expansion as it freezes.
• You can make large batches of homemade flavored water and freeze them in ice cube trays. This way you'll always have some at hand that you can easily use to cool your drink while adding flavor.
