Expiration & Storage Tips
When does onion salt expire?
Onion salt typically has a shelf life of about 3 to 4 years if unopened and stored in a cool, dark place. A sealed bottle of onion salt used infrequently can last up to its date of expiry printed on the bottle. Once opened, it can remain in good condition for about 1 to 2 years, as long as it is properly stored. Freezing isn't a common practice when it comes to onion salt, but if you choose to do so, it can help extend its shelf life even further, although the texture might change slightly upon defrosting.
How do you tell if onion salt is bad?
Onion salt doesn’t usually spoil, but over time, it can lose its flavor or potency. A sharp decrease in aroma or taste when you use it could be a sign it's past its prime. Another way to tell if your onion salt has gone bad is by its appearance. If there is a change in color or if it has become lumpy due to moisture, it may not be suitable for consumption anymore. If you spot any signs of mold or a weird smell, discard it immediately.
Tips for storing onion salt to extend shelf life
• Always store your onion salt in an airtight container to prevent moisture and other contaminants.
• Keep it in a dark, cool and dry place like a kitchen cabinet away from heat, light and moisture.
• Avoid using a wet spoon to scoop out the onion salt as it can introduce moisture and lead to clumping.
• Do not store it near the stove, oven, dishwasher, or refrigerator, as the heat or humidity from these appliances can degrade its quality.
• Even if you decide to freeze your onion salt, make sure it's properly sealed to avoid freezer burn. To defrost, leave it at room temperature and shake well before use.
