Expiration & Storage Tips
When does citric acid expire?
Citric acid, if stored properly, has an excellent shelf life. Typically, an unopened package of citric acid can last indefinitely, providing it's stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. If the package has been opened, it can still retain its potency for up to five years without any apparent difference in effectiveness. It's important to note that while citric acid itself doesn't go bad, it can clump over time due to moisture, but this does not affect its usability. Citric acid is usually not frozen as it lasts long at room temperature.
How do you tell if citric acid is bad?
It's quite tricky to tell if citric acid has gone bad, because it doesn't spoil in a traditional way. However, if you notice any discoloration, usually a yellowish tinge, or an off smell, then it's best to discard it. Also, if it has clumped together and become hard as a rock, it's probably too old and should be replaced.
Tips for storing citric acid to extend shelf life
• Store your citric acid in a cool, dry place.
• Keep it in a tightly sealed container to prevent moisture from clumping it together.
• Avoid subjecting the container to extreme temperature changes.
• An airtight container or zip-top bag within a dark cabinet or pantry is ideal.
• Do not store citric acid near substances like baking powder or baking soda to avoid accidental mix-ups.
