Expiration & Storage Tips
When does yellow food coloring expire?
Yellow food coloring generally has quite a long shelf life. Unopened, it can be stored almost indefinitely, with its lifespan largely determined by the printed expiration date. Once opened, liquid and gel food coloring should maintain their quality for about 3-6 months, while powder food coloring can last for about 2-3 years if stored correctly.
How do you tell if yellow food coloring is bad?
Telling if yellow food coloring has gone bad is rather simple. Look out for any off smells, an unusual change in color, or odd consistencies. If the liquid or gel starts to form lumps, or the powder has hardened, it's likely time to toss it out. Keep in mind, though, that crystallization is a normal process for gel-based food colorings and does not signify spoilage.
Tips for storing yellow food coloring to extend shelf life
• Store the food coloring in a cool, dark place like your pantry or kitchen cabinet. Avoid places with fluctuating temperatures or exposure to sunlight.
• Ensure the coloring containers are sealed tightly between uses to prevent air from entering and causing the product to dry out.
• For powdered food colorings, consider keeping them in airtight containers to prevent moisture access.
• Avoid using food coloring past its manufacturer indicated expiration date.
• Keep track of when you opened the food coloring to use it within its suitable timeframe after opening.
