Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tipo 00 flour expire?
Unopened, tipo 00 flour has a shelf life of up to a year, and this date is typically reflected on the packaging. Once opened, tipo 00 flour ideally should be used within two months. It can extend up to four months, but quality and texture may degrade over time. If you choose to freeze the flour, which is not common but possible, it can last up to two years. However, removing moisture as much as possible is essential when freezing to prevent the formation of ice crystals that can degrade the flour.
How do you tell if tipo 00 flour is bad?
Spoiled flour will have a stale or musty smell that is distinctly different from its fresh, slight nutty scent. It might also have visible pests like bugs, or it has clumps due to moisture contamination. Discoloration, like dark spots, can be a sign of mold. If any of these signs are present, the flour should not be used and needs to be discarded.
Tips for storing tipo 00 flour to extend shelf life
• Always store tipo 00 flour in a cool, dry place away from any heat sources.
• After opening, tightly seal the flour bag or transfer it to an airtight container to keep moisture and pests out.
• Use a dry spoon or measuring cup to take flour out of the bag or the container. Avoid putting a wet spoon or your hand directly into the flour to prevent introducing moisture.
• If you decide to freeze the flour, ensure to remove as much air as possible from the bag or container to avoid ice crystal formation and use a moisture-proof, sealed packaging.
