Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Blackberry Pie expire?
Freshly baked homemade blackberry pies usually last for about 2 days at normal room temperature. If on the other hand it's a store-bought pie and it's unopened, it can last up to 2-3 weeks past the printed date on the package if kept in a cool dark place. Once opened, store-bought pies have a shelf life of about a week in the fridge. Pies can also be frozen to extend their shelf life after baking or opening, lasting up to 6-8 months in the freezer.
How do you tell if Blackberry Pie is bad?
If the pie has been left out for over two days at room temperature or a week in the fridge, it's likely it has gone bad. First, check the scent - any sour or off smell is a warning. The second clue is the appearance - if there's any hint of mold, regardless of color, discard the pie. Lastly, if the pie filling has become extra watery or is leaking out excessively, it's another indicator that your pie is past its prime.
Tips for storing Blackberry Pie to extend shelf life
• Store the pie in the refrigerator in a pie keeper or loosely covered with plastic wrap or foil for up to a week.
• If you want to freeze a whole pie, cool it completely first. Then double wrap the pie in plastic wrap, followed by aluminum foil before storing it in the freezer.
• To defrost, place the frozen pie in the fridge for 24 hours prior to serving. For a like-fresh-baked texture, warm it in a preheated 350°F oven for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the pie.
