When does Jerky expire?
If you've bought pre-packaged jerky, it could stay good for 1 to 2 years when unopened and stored correctly. Once opened, it's usually good for about 1 to 2 weeks. If you've prepared homemade jerky and properly dehydrated it, it can last up to 2 months in air-tight containers. Sometimes, It can also be frozen for up to 6 months for a longer shelf-life. The key thing here is the moisture content - the more there is, the shorter the shelf life.
How do you tell if Jerky is bad?
If jerky has gone bad, you'll notice several telltale signs. It may have developed an off or rancid smell, which is a clear sign of spoilage. The texture could also change and become overly hard or brittle. Visually, the jerky may become darker or develop a dull appearance. You might also see mold growth which can appear as fuzzy patches on the surface. Always trustworthy, your taste buds will detect a change too - if jerky has a sour or unpleasant taste, it’s best to discard it.
Tips for storing Jerky to extend shelf life
• Store unopened jerky in a cool, dark place like your pantry. It doesn't need to be refrigerated until opened.
• Once opened, it's important to keep jerky in an airtight container or resealable bag to prevent it from drying out and being exposed to bacteria.
• For longer storage, consider vacuum-sealing portions of jerky before storing them in the freezer. Just remember to defrost it thoroughly in your refrigerator (which may take a day or two) before consumption.
• If you've made homemade jerky, ensure it's properly dehydrated and cooled before you store it to prevent moisture build-up that can lead to molds.
