Expiration & Storage Tips
When does fruit dip expire?
Fruit dip contains dairy or vegan substitutes, so it generally has a shorter shelf-life compared to dry or canned goods. Once opened, fruit dip lasts for about 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator before it starts to turn. However, always refer to the 'best by' date on the package as a guideline for maximum quality. If you've made a homemade fruit dip, it would ideally be consumed within 3 to 4 days. Freezing the dip isn't traditionally recommended as it can significantly alter the texture and consistency, causing it to become watery once thawed.
How do you tell if fruit dip is bad?
Fruit dip has gone bad if it shows signs of mold, has a foul or sour smell, or if there is a visible change in color or texture. It may also develop an off flavor if it has started to spoil. If your dip has been sitting out at room temperature for more than 2 hours, it's best to discard it as harmful bacteria may have multiplied at a fast rate.
Tips for storing fruit dip to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate fruit dip promptly. Quick cooling slows down the growth of bacteria.
• Keep the fruit dip in an airtight container or tightly sealed in its original packaging. You can also wrap the container in cling film for an extra layer of protection from air exposure.
• If serving for a party, consider setting the serving bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice. This keeps the dip cool and slows down bacterial growth.
• Avoid cross-contamination by using clean utensils every time you take some dip. Keep in mind that dipping a bitten fruit directly into the bowl can introduce bacteria that can start the spoilage process.
• It's always better to err on the side of caution. If you aren't sure about the freshness of the dip, it's safer to discard it and start with a new one.
