Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cookie butter expire?
Unopened cookie butter can last up to a year in your pantry, so long as it is stored in a cool, dry place. Once you crack the jar open, cookie butter is generally good for about two to three months. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s label as it can vary. If you've made homemade cookie butter, you should consume it within two weeks when stored in the refrigerator. Freezing cookie butter is not commonly practiced due to its high oil content and creamy consistency which may not fare well in freezing and thawing conditions.
How do you tell if cookie butter is bad?
With cookie butter, discoloration can indicate that it’s spoiling. So, if your cookie butter becomes darker or develops an off smell, those are signs that it has started to go bad. Also, if the texture becomes excessively hard or dry, despite proper storage, it might be time to toss it out. Mould is another clear indication that the spread has gone bad, so always take a good look before serving.
Tips for storing cookie butter to extend shelf life
• Always use clean utensils when serving cookie butter to avoid introducing bacteria into the jar.
• Keep your cookie butter stored in a cool, dark cupboard, away from any sources of heat.
• If stored in the refrigerator, cookie butter will harden, but it can easily be softened by letting it sit at room temperature for a few minutes. Yet, it generally does not need to be refrigerated.
• Once opened, make sure to secure the lid tightly after each use to keep humidity and other air contaminants away.
