Expiration & Storage Tips
When does chocolate candy expire?
Unopened chocolate candy usually lasts between 6 to 8 months if stored properly beyond the 'best by' date printed on the packaging. Once opened, the candy should be consumed within 2 to 3 weeks for optimal taste. This is because it can start losing its flavor after being exposed to air and may start to develop a chalky texture. If you decide to freeze it, a tightly sealed chocolate candy can last up to a year in the freezer.
How do you tell if chocolate candy is bad?
If your chocolate candy has gone bad, it will have a dull appearance and an off smell. It might also develop a white or grayish coating, commonly known as 'chocolate bloom'. Don't worry though; this doesn't mean the chocolate is spoiled. It's just the cocoa butter or sugar rising to the surface and it's typically safe to eat. However, the texture and taste may be affected. If the chocolate has been stored in hot conditions and melted, or if it smells like other foods (because it has absorbed their odors), it's probably best to toss it out.
Tips for storing chocolate candy to extend shelf life
• Store chocolate candy in a cool, dry place where the temperature is below 21°C (70°F). Heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to melt or 'bloom'.
• If you decide to refrigerate chocolate candy, wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap first to prevent it from absorbing odors of other food in the refrigerator. Before eating refrigerated chocolate, allow it to reach room temperature to prevent condensation from affecting the texture.
• For longer storage, you can freeze chocolate candy. Again, ensure it's wrapped tight and maybe even consider placing it in a zip-lock bag. And remember to defrost it in the fridge or at room temperature to prevent condensation.
• Avoid storing chocolate candy alongside strong-smelling food. Chocolate absorbs odors easily and it might ruin the taste.
