Expiration & Storage Tips
When does creme de menthe expire?
As a liqueur, crème de menthe does not technically expire and can be enjoyed for years if unopened. After opening, if stored properly, it can last up to one year without significant changes in flavor. However, it’s recommended to consume it within 6-12 months for peak taste. You should always check the best-before date on the label to ensure you're experiencing the best flavor. It’s not common to freeze crème de menthe as freezing can dull the flavors. But if you decide to do it, it should remain safe to consume indefinitely.
How do you tell if creme de menthe is bad?
Although crème de menthe doesn’t spoil in the same way perishable food does, you may notice some changes over time that may indicate it’s not at its best. If unopened, it might start to lose flavor after 3-4 years; once opened, it can start to degrade in taste after about a year. Look for signs of change in color, appearance or smell. It might develop an off smell, appear cloudy or have floating particles—these are signs that it has oxidized and should not be consumed.
Tips for storing creme de menthe to extend shelf life
• Keep your crème de menthe in a cool, dark place—like a cupboard or pantry—away from direct sunlight. This will help preserve its quality and taste.
• If you've opened the bottle, make sure to secure the cap tightly after each use to prevent oxidation.
• While it’s not common, if you choose to refrigerate it, make sure the cap is secured tightly as the aromas of other food could affect the taste.
• If unused for a long period, consider transferring the liqueur to a smaller container to reduce the amount of air contact which can accelerate degradation.
