Expiration & Storage Tips
When does hot chocolate expire?
Unopened hot chocolate mix usually keeps its quality for 2-3 years, even past the 'Best By' date indicated on the packaging. Once opened, a canister or packet of hot chocolate mix should be consumed within 6-12 months for optimum flavor. As for homemade hot chocolate from scratch, it's best to enjoy it fresh and consume it within 1-2 days, when stored in the refrigerator in a covered container. Hot chocolate can be frozen for longer storage; however, the taste might be slightly altered upon thawing. You should bake or consume it within 4-5 months when frozen.
How do you tell if hot chocolate is bad?
Signs of spoilage in hot chocolate mix are usually quite noticeable. If the powder develops an off smell, changes in color or texture, or if you notice any mold, it’s time to discard it. In case the powder turns clumpy, this isn’t a sign of spoilage, but rather that some sort of moisture has ended up in the package. It shouldn’t affect the taste, although it might make scooping the powder a bit more difficult.
Tips for storing hot chocolate to extend shelf life
• Keep your hot chocolate mix in a dry, cool, and dark place to lengthen its shelf life. Pantry or a kitchen cabinet away from the stove or oven is perfect.
• For opened hot chocolate mix, always make sure to seal it tightly after each use. If the package cannot be resealed, transfer the mix into an airtight container or resealable plastic bag.
• If making hot chocolate from scratch, prepare only what you can consume in one to two days to ensure freshness.
• While freezing hot chocolate is possible, it might alter the taste slightly upon thawing. Freeze it in airtight containers and portion it out before freezing for easy consumption later. To thaw, simply leave it in the refrigerator overnight.
