Expiration & Storage Tips
When does brownie mix expire?
A (sealed) bag of brownie mix typically lasts for about 12-18 months beyond the 'Best By' date printed on the package. Once the pack is opened, the mix can still last up to 6 months when stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. If the opened brownie mix is stored improperly or in a moist place, the chances of it going bad increases. Brownie mix does not usually require refrigeration or freezing, however, if you live in a particularly warm or humid climate, you might choose to refrigerate it to extend its shelf life, in which case it can last for up to a year.
How do you tell if brownie mix is bad?
To check if brownie mix has gone bad, you have to rely on your senses. Check the texture first. If it has hardened into a solid mass, or if it has large clumps which refuse to come apart, the mix is probably bad. Next, give it a sniff. A stale, sour or off smell indicates that the mix has gone bad. Another telltale sign of bad brownie mix is the presence of insects or mold. If you see any signs of these, discard the mix immediately.
Tips for storing brownie mix to extend shelf life
• Always store brownie mix in a cool, dry place, preferably in a pantry or kitchen cupboard.
• Once the pack is opened, transfer the remaining mix to an airtight container. This will prevent moisture from getting into the mix and prolong its shelf life.
• Avoid using a wet or dirty spoon to take out the mix. Moisture and contaminants can cause the mix to go bad faster.
• If you decide to refrigerate the brownie mix, make sure it is well-sealed to avoid moisture condensation. Bring it to room temperature before using again.
