Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Lemon Rice expire?
Lemon rice, when freshly cooked, could last for about 1 to 2 hours at room temperature. In the fridge, it stays good for about 3 to 5 days. Frozen lemon rice could last up to 1 to 2 months. As for unopened packets, they tend to have a best before date mentioned on the package, generally around 1 to 2 years from the manufacturing date.
How do you tell if Lemon Rice is bad?
Smell is a big indicator when it comes to rice going bad. Spoiled lemon rice has a funky, sour smell that's quite noticeable. You might also notice a change in colour or appearance such as molds. If the lemon rice has turned hard or dry, it's most likely past its prime. Lastly, if you taste it and it has a sour or off-flavor, it's probably gone bad.
Tips for storing Lemon Rice to extend shelf life
• Store leftover lemon rice in airtight containers or freezer bags before placing in the fridge or freezer. This helps prevent the rice from drying out and maintains its flavor.
• If you have fresh lemons on hand and citrus juice to the rice right before eating, this can extend the life of the rice by a day or two.
• Remember, when reheating the rice, only take out the portion you plan to consume to avoid temperature fluctuations for the remainder.
• When freezing, portion out the rice into smaller packs for easy future use. It’s better to defrost only what you require.
• If the rice is homemade, let it cool to room temperature before storing it. Avoid leaving it out for too long, as rice is susceptible to bacteria growth.
• Use the 'first in, first out' rule for the fridge – eat older food products before newer ones.
