Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Jerk Chicken expire?
When properly stored in the refrigerator, jerk chicken can last 3-4 days past the 'sell by' date unopened. Once opened, it has a shorter lifespan and should be eaten within the next 2 days for best freshness. If you've cooked homemade jerk chicken, it also falls under this 2-day rule after being in the fridge. Jerk chicken can also be frozen for up to 4 months.
How do you tell if Jerk Chicken is bad?
Stale jerk chicken will have a sour smell, similar to rotten eggs. If it's slimy or moldy, or if the color fades or darkens significantly, it's time for it to go. However, sometimes bad chicken can look and smell fine. If in doubt, taste a tiny piece. The flavor should be the determining factor.
Tips for storing Jerk Chicken to extend shelf life
• Keep the chicken in airtight containers or tightly wrapped in foil or plastic wrap to keep moisture out.
• Store cooked chicken in small, shallow containers so it cools faster, slowing bacterial growth.
• If you plan to store jerk chicken in the freezer, consider portioning it out in meal-size packages before freezing, so it is easier to thaw out only what you need.
• Always store chicken on the lowest rack in your fridge to avoid any drips on other foods.
• If freezing, make sure to add an extra layer or two of protection – such as a freezer bag or additional foil – to prevent freezer burn.
