Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Fish Pie expire?
A fresh unopened store-bought fish pie generally has a shelf life of about 3-4 days in the refrigerator. After opened, it's safe to consume for up to 2 days. However, homemade fish pie should be consumed within 1-2 days. Fish pies can also be frozen and have a shelf life of up to 3 months this way.
How do you tell if Fish Pie is bad?
You can tell if a fish pie has gone bad by its smell, texture, and appearance. If you notice a strong fishy or sour smell, it's a very strong indication that it has spoiled. Front looking at the pie, if you spot mold, discoloration, or a slimy texture, it's not safe to eat. Finally, if the pie tastes off or makes a sizzling sound when cut into, it's better to err on the side of caution and discard it
Tips for storing Fish Pie to extend shelf life
• Store your fish pie in an airtight container or wrap it with food grade plastic wrap to maintain its freshness and to prevent it from absorbing other flavours in your refrigerator.
• When freezing, make sure you package the pie securely to avoid freezer burn.
• To defrost a frozen fish pie, it's best to transfer it to the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight. Avoid thawing on the kitchen counter as this can lead to bacterial growth.
