Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Fish and Chips expire?
Fish and chips, a classic dish often enjoyed for its fresh and comforting taste, should be enjoyed immediately after purchase. If you must save your leftovers, they can last up to 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Beyond that, the fried fish and batter could become soggy and lose its appeal. If frozen right away and stored at a stable frozen temperature, it could last up to 1-2 months.
How do you tell if Fish and Chips is bad?
If your fish and chips have a strong, foul or fishy smell it's best to err on the side of caution and not consume it. Fish, in particular, can harbor bacteria that could make you unwell. Additionally, if the color has changed or there's any visible mold, it’s time to get rid of it. The texture is another telltale sign, as the batter should not be overly squishy or wet.
Tips for storing Fish and Chips to extend shelf life
• Store leftovers in airtight containers. The less air exposure, the better chances you have of keeping it preserved for longer.
• Refrigerate your container as soon as possible. The quicker the food cools down, the less likely it is to grow bacteria.
• If freezing, wrap the food in plastic wrap before placing it in a freezer bag.
• When ready to eat from the freezer, let it defrost in the fridge overnight or defrost in a microwave. Afterward, reheat in the oven to restore some of the crispiness of the batter and chips.
• Never refreeze fish and chips that have already been defrosted. Doing so could lead to foodborne illness.
