Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rice cereal expire?
Unopened rice cereal can last for about a year if stored properly and the package has not been opened. Once opened, a package of rice cereal typically stays fresh for about 4 to 6 months. If the rice cereal has been cooked, it should be consumed within 3-4 days of being prepared. Freezing rice cereal isn't very common, but if you choose to do so, it can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months.
How do you tell if rice cereal is bad?
Rice cereal generally stays good for a long time, but you'll want to check for a few things if you're unsure. Look for changes in the color or appearance of the cereal - it should maintain a consistent color and not appear moldy. Smell the cereal - it should not have a rancid or off smell. If it smells okay, you can taste a small amount. Expired rice cereal can have a stale or off taste. If any of these signs are present, it is best to throw the cereal away.
Tips for storing rice cereal to extend shelf life
• Keep the cereal in its original box, tightly sealed, and store in a cool, dry place. Throw away the cereal if there are signs of insects or pests.
• Using airtight containers can help prolong its shelf life after it has been opened. Make sure to seal the container well after each use to prevent exposure to air, which can cause the cereal to go stale quickly.
• If you've cooked more cereal than you can eat, refrigerate within two hours in a covered, shallow container to cool it quickly and prevent bacteria growth.
• While freezing isn't commonly done, rice cereal can be frozen if stored in a freezer-safe bag or container. Be sure to remove as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn.
